Lyons has always been a prosperous city mainly due to the silk industry. In the 1740’s all of Europe was supplies with silk painted goods, tres chic. The slopes of Croix-Rousse is a network of passage ways called Traboules once used to protect sheets of silk from the weather. During WW II they also came in handy for the Resistance fighters.
