WHAT IS THE TRAVEL WRITING LIFE REALLY LIKE? IS IT AS GREAT AS PEOPLE THINK? I HOPE TO COME TO SOME CONCLUSIONS AS I SHARE MY TRIPS AND TRAVAILS.

The Hodophobia Boogieman

by Kent St. John on April 11, 2012

I was reading the horoscope page in the Kingston Freeman this morning and learned a new word, hodophobia, it the word for fear of travel. It derives from the Greek word hodos; meaning path of phobia needs no explanation. My horoscope becons me to leave the safety of familiar faces, I find it very timely as I started working on plans for an upcoming road trip. I chose Virginia because of the history and the fact that I’ve only been to Wash DC once before and the only time I have been in Virginia I found it very welcoming. I have an invited stay in DC for a piece but the rest of the trip is going to be open. I want to just let the road coax me along and a guidebook for reference.

While I’ve never had a fear of travel I do feel that traveling requires some exercise, the more you do the better your road sense kicks in. The sharper your intuition for direction and destination, that funky restaurant or off beat hotel seem to pop up and all feels right as you head on down the road. I don’t know the word for it but basically I think that what you don’t use you lose.
