Yesterday morning, I drove through the twisy Big Cottonwood Canyon 25 miles east of Salt Lake City.
This is where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Basin floor, where spectacular vistas and rugged rocky peaks abound, where picnic areas, campgrounds and hiking trails tempt you to rest.
I am absolutely amazed at the size of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. At 2.1 million acres it’s bounded by several chains of wilderness peaks and surprising diversity.
I kept my camera locked and loaded for elk, moose and mountain goat but nothing appeared – yet.
The Wasatch Mountains reach over 11,000’ and the CVB guide assured me that skiing here would be wonderful. She was right. But more on that later…
