5 Favorite Travel Apps for 2013

by Sonja Stark on February 13, 2013

When you’re traveling alone in flight, shouldering tons of stuff, it’s impossible to enjoy the journey. The lines, the screenings, removing gear from bags so the TSA can swab my stuff, it’s a real pain in my tripod.

Worst yet, because of the big loads, many times I can’t fit into a bathroom stall. I wait until I’ve boarded the plane. And, forget about standing in line for food between flights. I haven’t a hand to spare.

That’s why I love the following apps for my I-Phone. When every pound counts these apps lessen the weight by saving me from toting maps, prints outs, travel books and pamphlets. Others just help with planning for the unexpected.

1. Seat Guru: This app is god-sent. It tells me which overhead bins are the largest, which seats have the most legroom and which seats are closest to the loo. Before I decide on a seat I check the color-coded map that lists green as being a ‘good’ seat, red as a ‘not-so-good’ and yellow as an ‘avoid-at-all-costs’ seat.

2. Just Landed: Alerts my friends and family when I’ve landed (or been delayed), what terminal my flight arrived at and how long it will take them to drive to pick me up. This one cost $1.99 but worth it!

3. Zero Carbon: Perfect for those who have to travel but don’t want to be an environmental hypocrite. Find out how much CO2 is generated and how to offset it.

4. Airports by Travel Nerds: Want to know the wi-fi availability and pricing for each airport? Where the nearest Starbucks is? With over 200 detailed airport terminal maps of the 50 most popular airports, you’ll never be lost again.

5. WhatsApp: Finally an app that lets you text message for free when you’re traveling international – provided the person you’re texting also has the app. Include photos, videos and audio files as well. The best part about this app is there is no advertising and it works between phone platforms. Nokia, Blackberry, Android, Windows, any phone can download and use this app.

All of these apps sounds great; thank you for sharing Sonja! I’ve never heard of these apps before, but I will make sure to download them before my next business trip for my job at DISH. With all the traveling I do through the years I always make sure to have entertainment apps downloaded on my phone as well; with DISH Anywhere being my favorite. I like that app because it allows me to watch all of my shows from home, live or from off my DVR, everywhere I go in the world. I’m a TV junkie so not only do I love it for entertainment, but also as a way to keep up with my favorite shows when I can’t be in front of my actual TV set! :)
