There are three incredibly beautiful waterfalls in Rensselaer County that few people know about: Barbarville Falls, Mount Ida Falls and Buttermilk Falls. At a towering 86 feet, Barbarville Falls is our favorite and demands very little to enjoy.
All you have to do is park in the designated area off Plank Road heading north out of Poestenkill, walk north for a little bit, turn left onto Blue Factory Road (crossing over the bridge) and take an immediate left onto a narrow trailhead on the corner. The falls is no more than 100 feet from the road.
Along the left side of the falls are numerous rocky outcrops where you can take photos of the top of the falls. Follow the trailhead to the plunge pool at the bottom for more spectacular vantage points. Cursed those annoying “Posted” signs that someone felt the need to place directly on the rock itself – a real photo ruiner!
Use caution this time of year – it’s super slippery as ice is covered by recent snow storms.
