When traveling to Lisbon, a pilgrimage to Cafe A Ginjinha Espinheira Rossio is mandatory. A small closet sized bar with only room enough for three people, they serve one drink, the Ginja. Developed by a Galician friar, Ginjinha berries ( sour cherries) are steeped in brandy and served in shot glasses with a berry on the bottom. It is sweet, sticky and a wonderful pick me up any time of the day. Down the shot, lick your lips, chew the cherry, spit out the seed and repeat.
