Fourth Largest Stadium in the World

Beaver Stadium

There was no disguising that I was approaching a Big Ten town earlier today. In the midst of razed cornfields and brown tracks of farm land sits a shining emblem of glory and magnificence. It beckoned me and my Mazda from miles away.

Approaching, I knew it was Beaver Stadium, the second largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth in the world.

Home of the Nittany Lions, the stadium is a premier football venue. It’s capacity is staggering – upwards of 107,000 ticket holders watch their beloved team play.

The stadium is so big it reminds of an early European Basilica built to attract masses of religious faithful from miles around.

After the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Penn State’s campus is the second most-photographed place in Pennsylvania. Even now, during an empty Thanksgiving week, I saw dozens of fans taking photos of the life-size bronze statue of (former) football coach Joe Paterno.
