Nittany Cows, Cougars and Commercial Stops

Cows in PA

While on assignment in Penn State today I did a little roaming around.

The word “Nittany” pops up everywhere you look. There’s a Nittany mall, bank, society club, oil company, building supply shop, beverage center, even an Inn on campus called the Nittany Lion Inn, and, of course, the famous Nittany Lion mascot.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think the name of this town was Nittany rather than State College.

The word comes from the early 1700s settlers who adopted the term from the Algonquian-speaking Native Americans. It means ‘single mountain’ and refers to the single mountain that separates the two valleys.

I’d love to find the time to climb Nittany Mountain that overlooks this beautiful area of Pennsylvania.
