Rockettes To The Rescue

The Art Deco Lobby

An evening of long legs, tap routines, high-flying karate kicks and 3-D wizardry. This is the “Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular” modernized from a humdrum chorus line into a theatrical extravaganza.

The world-renowned Rockettes kicked off their holiday season tour on Friday.

When I ordered tickets a week ago, I envisioned bringing a book to carry me through the infantile moments. There were none of those nor any crying children .

Instead, I sat mesmerized at the caliber of talent – the athleticism, singing ability and precision. Added to that were larger-than-life stage props, two 3-D trips – one through Manhattan with Santa and the other inside an animated video game, and a light show on the inside of the cavernous hall.

The girls deliver five shows a day, seven days a week until January 2, 2012.

Moreover, if you’re an architectural buff like me read up on the historical 1929 design of this landmark theater. The “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ and hydraulic orchestra lift are engineering marvels.
