I was hoping but not counting, I caught it, the Posada, the “accommodation”. It is based on Joseph and Mary finding a place to stay for the birth of Christ. In Santa Fe a candle lit procession follows the pair around the main Plaza while music is played by following musicians. At various places actors play devilish characters yelling down from roofs and balconies, no room move on. Boos and hisses erupt from the crowd and the procession moves on. Finally it is the old Governor’s palace that the couple, and a few hundred followers are let in. Music plays and a party begins. What a blast and a chance to see tradition hundreds of years old being played out, New Mexican style.
