Buried treasure throughout Buffalo, NY

Memorial Day Flags at Forest Lawn

This week was spent exploring North Buffalo and discovering a place of infinite beauty where over 155,000 people rest in peace.

While navigating Delaware Ave I slowed down unexpectedly to marvel at the sheer size of Forest Lawn cemetery. An enormous front gate welcomes the dearly departed with stone arches and blooming spring flowers.

Inside you’ll find manicured rock gardens, bridges, an Old Chapel, sculptures and impressive mausoleums like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Blue Sky Mausoleum.

A few notables buried here include the 13th President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, Irving Berlin’s first wife, the Super Freak Rick James, Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress and Aretha Franklin’s mother Barbara.

For Memorial Weekend, the Erie County American Legion honored thousands of fallen heroes by decorated up to 4000 graves with ceremonial flags.

The ‘Sunday In The Cemetery’ trolley tours start this month but sell out fast.
