Check out the height on those wedding shoes! It takes some serious confidence to sport towering heels like that on the biggest day of a girl’s life.

Today was spent at a popular place for picture-taking for marrying couples – Yasnaya Polyana. The estate is the home of Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Tolstoy was born, wrote his novels and is buried here.

Galina Alekseeva, a Fullbright scholar who spent semesters at Columbia and Harvard Universities in the states, gave us a private tour through rooms preserved exactly as they were the year Tolstoy died in 1910. Even Tolstoy’s simple white garb hangs above his bedside waiting to be worn. Alekseeva is the consummate researcher on Tolstoy – of the thousands of dusty books inside the home, she has probably read them all.

The grounds are occupied with apple trees, hunting dogs, horse pastures, birch-lined foot paths and tranquil bridges. It’s a place of enormous pride, pleasure and imagination for Tulans.
