Big changes are happening in Ithaca. Sometime next month or early April (2013) construction begins to renovate a mecca of urban culture called the Commons. The pedestrian mall is dotted with boutiques, retail shops and restaurants and is the centerpiece of Ithaca’s colorful social and civic life.
The redesign will include improved lighting, more trees and upgrades to the underground infrastructures like manholes, electric lines and sewers. Elements of the natural gorges that surround the city will appear in the designs of fancy new water fountains and a sidewalk with a “distinctive paving pattern.”
Construction will take 2 years but, have no fear, the myriad of businesses will stay open and the annual festivals will happen. The Downtown Ithaca Alliance is thinking of ways to cover up the work zones so it still looks inviting and safe for all.
