River Surfing in Munich, Germany

While biking around the Bavarian Capital of Munich, don’t miss out on watching the wetsuits who brave surfing the artificial waves on the river Isar. The fast flowing water attracts the best in sport because there is so little room for error.

They call themselves “river surfers” and the sport here is super dangerous. If they don’t hit the water immediately in ‘surf’ mode they are apt to fall on huge rocks below. An inexperienced surfer died a few months ago from the perilous conditions.

Still, the sport has been around since the 1970s and has resulted in a competition called the European River Surfing Championships.
