Hot green tea steeped at 4,180 feet and poured into four precious porcelain cups. A ball of Fresh mozzarella cheese drizzled with EVOO layered with prosciutto and fresh basil spread out over white linen. These are not the typical standards one comes to rely on (like trail mix, cereal bars or apples) while backpacking up the highest peak in the Catskills.
But, New Yorkers who hike this popular terrain do so with as much panache and fanfare as everything else. The bonus was they all shared their loot with hungry fellow hikers like myself.
Hiking Slide Mountain may be the highest mountain in the Catskills but it’s far and away the easiest to climb. The balmy conditions on Saturday propelled me to the top in record time.
