Celebrity Sightings in NYC

New York Times Travel Show Books

All things travel are on display at the New York Times Travel Show this weekend. The size of the crowd and the number of vendors keeps getting bigger and better every year. Albany’s own flamboyant Chef Yono Purnomo spoke at the “Taste of the World” stage alongside familiar friends from GoNomad.com – writer Max Hartshorne and photographer Paul Shoul.

Smiling reps and agents from every state and country cornered attendees with sweepstakes and offers. Cabot Creamery handed out cubes of cheese to hungry hordes while the I Love New York campaign introduced us to a new eco-friendly green apple.

For an aerial view of the show floor, I climbed the rock wall in the “Family Fun Zone” with my buddy Jennifer, a first for the both of us. From above – a sprawling patchwork of adventure wannabes. Kimono-clad beauties could be seen dancing from the Asian Global Stage while writing team Pauline and Arthur Frommer autographed books in the far left corner.

An unrelated sidebar: Shaun White! Back from Sochi, the two-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder came bouncing down 15th street while I was parking near Chelsea Markets. He was surrounded by an entourage of larger-than-life musicians and skateboard homies. Funny but if you ask a New Yorker if they ever notice celebrities, they feign interest. So I kept it cool and resisted the photo op.
