Art in Woodstock NY, Byrdcliffe Colony
As I drive around the house I find my eyes constantly are drawn to the Catskill Mts. that surround us here in Ulster County. Beauty runs deep here. It is the reason Englishman Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and his American wife Jane Byrd McCall started a utopian style artist community in Woodstock in 1902, “a brotherhood of artists”, was born and named Byrdcliffe. Thirty buildings sprouted up by 1903 and artist came to work and share living off the combining of dollars their work earned, and it is said that wild living was a part of the scene.
Byrdcliffe is still a community of artists with a theater, studios, shop and various classes covering all art, now called the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild and has artists in residence program. Follow in the steps of Thomas Mann, Bob Dylan, Eva Watson-Schutze, Will Durant, Isadora Duncan and Chevy Chase among many others. If in the area at least visit, absolutely beautiful!
