Diversity means Democracy in the North Country

I don’t go home much but when I do I’m faced with this: snow, dirt roads and overcast skies. On the other hand, I discover hidden waterfalls, scenic trails, museums and good eats.

Best of all, I enjoy sharing an Adirondack Ale with card-loving, blue-collar, politically passionate Democrats – my family.

An easy trek but preferable in the summer (too many gun-toting deer hunters in November) is Lampson Falls. Located on route 27 in the town of Clare, 20 minutes from Clarkson University and not far from Potsdam College, it’s a popular climb for college students.

There are plenty of greasy spoons and fast food chains in the North Country but Dad doesn’t live far from a hometown favorite called Sabad’s. The menu offers a little of everything but the owners are originally from Albanian and so they treated us to an old-fashion feast including fresh veggies with a unique sheep cheese, stuffed dolma (cabbage leaves) and super tender lamb.

Head Chef and owners Tony and Kathy Alketa relocated to Norfolk from the Neolithic town of Korçë many years ago. Since taking over the restaurant it’s become a bonafide treasure in the community.
