Owner Tom Struzzieri couldn’t be prouder of the historic property he’s replicated in Saugerties, NY.
He’s taken a partial footprint from where the 1903 Cantine Paper Company once stood and built the handsome Diamond Mills Hotel and Tavern. The 30-bed boutique just opened in January but is already gaining a reputation for impeccable cuisine and residential luxury.
The industrial exterior was crafted to look like the historic manufacturing facility but inside is a modern refuge of amenities.
The floors in the bathrooms are heated with free Wi-Fi. Other charming but modern touches include glass desks with fleur-de-lis shaped beams as legs and cozy gas fireplaces.
The hotel is perched alongside the majestic Esopus Creek Waterfalls so every suite has a balcony view of it.
Struzzieri says that in a few short years clean hydro-electric energy will be generated from the waterfalls which is how the Paper Mill used to run the factory.
Executive Chef Giuseppe Napoli is a graduate of CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and is thrilled to be back in the Hudson Valley. His specialties includes high-quality meats, fish, house-made pastas, breads and pastries.
I dined al fresco on a sweeping deck overlooking the waterfalls, completely smitten with Napoli’s Lobster Corn Chowder starter followed by the Asparagus & Rock Shrimp Risotto. I couldn’t resist the side dish of Lobster Truffle Mac & Cheese.
Ace mixologist Justine treated me to a variety of specialty drinks including the “Kumquat Mojito” with Hendrick’s Gin and touch of Limoncello. Other musts include the Honey Tengerine Margarita with Cointreau and fresh lime.
The hotel just launched a highly unique lunch menu that includes a Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Jam Avocado on Brioche Bread and Tavern Hand Cut Truffle Parmesan Fries along with BBQ Short Rib Flat Bread with Caramelized Onions, Horseradish Sauce, Bacon, Pineapple, Smoked Mozzarella and Orange Gremolata.
