I was called in on assignment to document a Lexus event called “Design Matters” yesterday that turned out to be, to my surprise, inside the world’s largest multimedia complex; the legendary Pier 59 Studios.
The paparazzi will argue that celebs like Debra Messing, Emma Roberts and Kristin Chenoweth were the true attraction. President Akio Toyoda might lobby for the Lexus LF-LC hybrid showcase. Japanese artists would toast to the short film series and life-size puppets that wowed the audience. But, my bid is on the venue itself.
In normally overcrowded, tucked-up boutique studios throughout Manhattan, it was such a relief to film in a 100,000 square-foot column-free space. Cathedral-high ceilings with large windows let in plenty of light and a sound-stage even allowed for a raucous performance by the Grammy Award-winning hip hop band “The Roots.”
The rain held off long enough so that Effen vodka and caviar could be served to the movers and shakers from a private deck overlooking the Hudson River.
