Travel, Advertising and Bourdain
It’s not often that travel meets advertising, but when it does, you have my full attention. Case in point are tourism ads like the one above. The pristine imagery has me wondering whether the tourism board is over-selling the place, but I am not getting into the age-old debate of the truth in advertising.
On the contrary I am glad that here’s a commercial which is looking past the slum tourism craze in India and focusing on the myriad characters and moods of the place, kind of like what Anthony Bourdain did when he visited the cities of Mumbai and Kolkata for an episode of ‘No Reservations’. He hit a sixer at the Kolkata Maidan, chatted about Jim Morrison with a local and dug into papri chaat. Broadly speaking, a sixer is to cricket what a homerun is to baseball and papri chaat is a spicy veggie salad usually sold by roadside vendors.
