Beat the winter blues at Phillipin Kill Preserve

Who needs a gym membership when there are mixed terrain trails just across the street? On our way to the YMCA in Delmar, NY, I caught sight of hikers in the woods and wetlands.

I got curious and pulled into the Mansions Apartment Complex to investigate. Mutti’s keen eye for trails, long and short, quickly spied the trailhead kiosk on the left. We parked in one of two available parking spots off Fisher Blvd.

To our delight this was another Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy Preserve, specifically Phillipin Kill Preserve. The 1-mile loop cut across a frozen tributary and hugged the edge of a rolling hill permeated with beech trees.

We followed the red trailhead past track indentations made by white-tailed deer and overwintering birds. Albeit short, our 30 minute outdoor exercise warm up was a welcome change to doing the same on an indoor track at the Y.
