Newport is My Next Port of Call

Staying Right on the Newport Harbor in the exciting city of sailing

I am taking another August trip with one of my favorite people, my granddaughter Sofie Cosme.

Sofie Cosme will be my traveling companion next week in Newport, RI.

Last August, around this exact time, I flew out to Los Angeles with Sofie and her brother Nathan, for a six-day adventure in Newport, Costa Mesa, and Anaheim California. We had fun riding electric bikes around beautiful downtown Newport and the Harbor. We met towering Los Angeles Ram football players and capped it off with a night at the Pageant of the Masters, which to this day remains the most impressive live show I’ve ever witnessed.

This week, on Sunday, I’ll drive to the coast of Rhode Island to stay for two nights at Hammett’s Hotel, right on the wharf in the Sailing Capital of Newport. I am going to be careful on this trip, during the time of Covid, and we will wear our masks and stay distant, and eat our meals outside.

I have to respect the family, because, after our Newport Jaunt, we are all meeting up at a rental house in Westport, MA.  I am still awaiting my Covid test results, so I want to stay totally clear to make the rest of the fam comfy around me.

We will be packing a lot into our three-day stay. We will visit a few of the famous Newport Mansions for a “Servant’s Life Tour,” and take a sunset cruise on the Amazing Grace around the Newport Harbor.

I have always loved harbor tours, going back to my earliest days in Edgartown, when I pined for a motorboat and jumped on the Yacht Club’s launch in the evenings who took boat0wners out to their boats in the pitch black.

We will visit a famous car museum and a golf center, and if the stars align right, we’ll even take a helicopter tour to see the city from above.  Sofie was especially enthusiastic about that.   One thing that we will definitely not miss is the famous 3.5-mile long Cliff Walk, that winds its way along the shore right in front of the big mansions.

Also on the agenda is Rail Explorers, which is a pedal-powered bike vehicle that rides on a railroad track along the edge of Narragansett Bay. I did something like this in France once, it was called Velo-Rail, and it was a marvelous way to spend a morning.

Although I do like to keep busy on my trips, when I bring along Sofie, we try to mix in a little simple relaxation, so we will be spending some time on one of the many beaches that surround Newport. I want to simply sit on the beach, and not take any notes and just enjoy the summer during part of this trip. I

The last time I was in Newport was on a Blount Cruises trip in 2014 when we visited many islands in Mass and RI.  I loved seeing the yachts up close and hearing the stories that Captain Mike would share with us in the morning when we steamed into a new port.

While it’s still a dicey time around the country, with Covid cases raging, we learned last week in NY State how to travel and be safe and not be obsessed with the masks, and the protocol. Just avoid the crowds and distance, and most of all, have fun.
