Westport for Some Family Vacationing
Instead of Eagles Mere, We found a comfy, big house in Westport Mass for our family vacation
After our trip to Newport, Sofie and I drove up and then down again to the coastal town of Westport Mass to stay for five days with our family. This was an interesting mix because none of our spouses joined us. So it was just my two sisters Jenny and Caroline and their kids plus Kate with Nate and Sofie.
We have been doing these family vacations for the past nine years at Eagles Mere, where we’d always rent the same huge house and the routines followed a predictable pattern. But this year when my sister Anne said no to another EM get together, it was nixed.
With the pandemic, no one thought back in March that we could gather, and for a few months, nothing was planned. But Kate kept her interest and found a great big house in Westport, and we all chipped in to rent it for four nights and five days. It was an abridged version of our regular six-night vacation together.
This time, though, cooking was not as daunting as in year’s past when the table would max out at about 22. Here just ten of us came, and my sister Jenny and I had the first night’s duty. Jen got swordfish and steaks, and I made zucchini fritters, corn and potatoes on the grill.
We all got along well, and we kept up the usual activities that we enjoy in PA… board games, puzzles, time to just hang on our devices, badminton, and outside fires.
Because of the pandemic, we all went and got tested for COVID before we arrived. So we had no problems with hugs and close contact for the duration. We knew that there was too much fear and too much closeness in this kind of a rental and by doing this, we all felt more relaxed.
Westport is a fun little town, not much of a town center except it does have this little old fishing harbor and one oyster bar that sounded like it would be fun. We chose to stay home on that cloudy evening, but we did enjoy a beach outing at East Beach Road.
The main beach in Westport is Horseneck Beach which we found was very rocky and had sharp shells on the water. So we only stayed there for one visit.
Westport also has a fantastic market called Lee’s Market where they sell just about everything and it’s all good quality and fresh. It was. a nice find since we knew we’d be cooking in every night, using the grill and enjoying the local seafood. Our vacation was a big success this year, and I’m happy we got to know Westport and that we all had such fun.
